SteamOS is our Linux-based operating system. The base system draws from Debian 8, code named Debian Jessie.

The GNOME session of SteamOS includes various open source applications, such as Brasero for CD/DVD burning, Evince document viewer, Eye of GNOME image viewer, Iceweasel web browser, GNOME Terminal, GNOME Dictionary, and GNOME Screenshot.

It also provides a desktop mode (GNOME) which can run regular Linux applications.

Valve originally designed the SteamOS operating system for its Steam Machines gaming console, which should be available sometime in the near future.

Until then, you can download SteamOS and enjoy a rock-solid gaming environment powered by Linux.
