Ubuntu Core is the minimal Ubuntu installation ideally for small environments. It contains just the basic OS layer that supports any other software to run over it.

This is Utopic Unicorn edition of Ubuntu Core, project that provides Linux OS developers with a minimal root file system.

It is basically a 200MB Linux rootfs that contains around 196 packages that can be extended to be a full distro.

Since it contains the dpkg and apt tools, you can install whatever you want to tailor it to your needs.

Please keep in mind that Ubuntu Core is not an actual Linux operating system.

All in all, experienced Linux distribution developers can use the Ubuntu Core project to create desktop, server or embedded operating system that use the stable and reliable base of the world’s most popular free OS, Ubuntu Linux.
