Mono Project is an Open Source implementation of the various ECMA and .NET framework technologies for Unix, Mac OS X, and Windows.

The project includes a C# compiler, a base class library which implements .Net Framework compatible classes, a Mono class library which provides additional functionality for cross-platform development and a Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) runtime engine.

In addition to C#, the Mono project provides support for a variety of other languages, including Java, Python, Visual Basic.Net.

Despite the fact that it is a Linux implementation of the .NET programming language, Mono is cross-platform and open source, supported on mainstream operating systems like Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, not only on GNU/Linux.
